In 1934, in the center of Murmansk, on Lenin Avenue, the first “high-rise buildings” appeared - two seven-story buildings, mirroring each other. In the pre-war city, where stone and brick houses had just begun to be erected, they seemed like real skyscrapers. The central heating, parquet floors and bathrooms were also a novelty. Among the residents who received orders for luxurious, fully furnished apartments were the most famous captains of one of the largest ports in Russia. It is not surprising that people immediately dubbed them "captain’s houses".
In 2016, in honor of the centenary of the founding of the capital of the Arctic, the “captain’s houses,” like the entire ensemble of Stalinist architecture, were included in the list of state-protected cultural heritage sites of the Russian Federation. At the beginning of 2022, the buildings on the main avenue of the city were illuminated with architectural and artistic lighting.
RADUGA™ Signum-9 spotlights form a pattern of vertical facades, emphasizing the height of buildings. The flood lighting with Lumen-U-12 linear luminaires highlights the cornices and attic floor. The architectural lighting helps convey the combination of volumes on which the composition of the “captain’s houses” is based. The buildings located at the intersection simultaneously play the role of light dominants and a symbolic main entrance to the port part of the city.
The project was developed by our partner - the company SvetExpert, and implemented by the ANO "Center for Urban Development of the Murmansk Region" as part of the improvement program “Our Murmansk” improvement program, which is part of the people’s strategy “Live in the North!”
