One of the favorite locations of Nizhny Novgorod residents is the Kanavinsky Bridge. It offers breathtaking views of the historical part of the city. And with the advent of architectural and artistic lighting, the bridge itself became a separate spectacle, attracting the attention of tourists and residents of the capital of the Volga region. View of the night Strelka - the confluence of the Volga and Oka - and the bridge shining with multi-colored lights have already become the hallmark of Nizhny.
The bridge was built in 1933, to replace the floating one, which served as a temporary crossing, as it was assembled in the spring and dismantled in the fall. It was a structure made of cargo ships with a shallow draft - flat-bottom boat, connected to each other and covered with boardwalk on top. The Kanavinsky bridge became the first permanent bridge in the city, connecting the Nagorny part of the city with Zarechnaya.
In 2021, as part of the celebration of the 800th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod, the company "Svet Expert" developed an outdoor lighting concept and a light master plan for the city, the central element of which was the Kanavinsky Bridge.
As "Svet Expert" specialists told us, it was necessary to use lighting to draw attention to the architectural features of the bridge, while avoiding dazzling drivers of ships and ground vehicles.
The concept of static lighting reflects Kanavinsky bridge's dominant role in urban architecture. Dynamic lighting with 8 different scenarios for weekdays and holidays emphasizes its function as a link between the banks and the constant movement of the river.
The project involves 672 linear RGBW STRIA-36 luminaires with a light beam angle of 60⁰ and DMX control for flood lighting. To illuminate the supports of the arched vaults, 524 powerful APEX 200 architectural LED spotlights are used. The body rotation angle of up to 90⁰ allows you to accurately focus the light flux, and thanks to the IP 67 degree of protection, the spotlight is not afraid of high humidity and direct splashes.
Some interesting facts. The length of the bridge is 795.5 meters, width 23.6 meters. The bridge does not open, but is navigable. It is located next to Strelka, the confluence of the Volga and Oka. At first it was called Pakhomovsky, in honor of the People's Commissar of Water Transport of the USSR. When Nikolai Ivanovich Pakhomov was accused of espionage and then shot, the bridge was urgently renamed Oksky, later it became Kanavinsky - after the name of the city settlement. The first dynamic lighting on the bridge was installed back in 2013. But the very next year she was gone, as unknown persons stole the cable.
